Club Extracting
In order to provide an affordable and food safe honey extraction facility for use by its members, the ECWBA has purchased extraction equipment and secured a facility for use to store and use it in.
The president of our club, Gerard Schubert, came across the Rushford Meadery and Winery in his neighborhood. Gerard stopped in and spoke with the owner about using the Meadery's facilities for honey extraction. The owner, Shane, has been very gracious and willing to help. He is very supportive of beekeepers and knows how important bees are in the world.
For members interested in using our honey extracting equipment, housed at the Rushford Meadery and Winery, dates will be posted here when we are scheduling time slots. This won't be until toward the end of summer each year starting 2018.
We will attempt to schedule members for same day, back to back extracting slots in an effort to minimize supply use, cleanup time and use of Shane's time. Set up and clean up has to be done every day, no matter how many people are extracting. The person in the first time slot will be responsible for set up. The last person in the time slot will be responsible for clean up. Everyone in between is responsible for helping out when needed, especially if they are available for clean up at the end.
It takes about 30-45 minutes for set up. It takes about an hour or so for clean up. Each run of the extractor takes about 20-30 minutes for 12 frames. Straining and bottling will vary by individual. If we can fit as many sets of 12 frames as possible, in between set up and clean up, we can best utilize our supplies and minimize how much of Shane's time we take up. Consider bringing a helper to assist you.
ALL apiarists are expected to be courteous to their host and fellow extractors. Please practice sanitary processing, even if you are extracting for yourself. Time slots may be limited. Please contact us at [email protected] or fill out the form below to make your appointment once dates have been scheduled in late summer. Shane at the Meadery prefers Sunday extractions, but will accomodate other days as needed.
As the energy required to power the facility is provided by our host at The Meadery, we ask that you make a $10 donation to, or $20 purchase from, the Rushford Meadery and Winery each time you use the extracting facilities.
