After a respectable amount of fretting and hand-wringing, I decided to move forward and order the Omano OM36-BL microscope that’s recommended for beekeepers by Randy Oliver. Thanks for bringing your microscopes to the meeting Monty, explaining how they work, and letting me try them out. There should be plenty of time for me to get accustomed to the Omano prior to bee season. I also found the smart phone adapter that Monty demonstrated and have it on my wish list. (The income tax refund that was heading toward my mortgage took a left turn. Again.)
Pam presented a photo tour of the extraction procedure she went through at the Rushford Meadery and Winery, and graciously accepted a position as the Coordinator for extractions. Members should contact Pam when they want to use to the extractor and she will create and maintain a Google calendar for who’s scheduled to use it, when. Because clean-up is the hardest part, it was suggested that we have group extractions so there’s only one clean-up for multiple extractions. But everyone is free to make individual arrangements by contacting Pam at [email protected] and she will coordinate with Shane.

The ECWBA’s 12-frame radial extractor at the Rushford Meadery and Winery went through an initial extraction yesterday, 2/15. Member Pam Keller had frames of honey to extract and offered to do a test run along with Shane Coombs, Rushford Meadery and Winery proprietor. Part of Pam’s mission was to determine, with Shane, the best way to go about things, and to develop an initial procedure. According to Pam, all went well and she will report her adventure at tomorrow’s meeting. She said she has lots of photos and will walk and talk us through her experience. Fortunately there was no need for the bee blower that her husband, Jeff, donated to the ECWBA because it’s still in my Jeep.
Tomorrow’s meeting will be very full. Member Monty Belmer will be introducing us to microscopy, Pam will tell us about her extraction experience, and I’m pretty sure Laurie will want to discuss plans for the March 17 Event with Damon Reabe. I think the Russian Bee Event with Sue Dompke went very well last year, and we will probably follow suit with this Event. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s meeting, and finding out if I can see through a microscope successfully. In a very rare act of restraint, I have not purchased the Beekeepers Microscope prior to knowing if I can use it. It’s been hard folks. Patience is not my strong suit. See you tomorrow at the Caestecker Library in Green Lake, 9:30. Gerard |
