Dear fellow ECWBA members; I am very pleased to announce an upcoming event. Sue Dompke, owner of Sweet Mountain Farm on Washington Island, has offered us a presentation and discussion on Russian honey bees. Sue is a Russian bee queen breeder and maintains 50+ treatment-free production hives on the island. She knows her Russians. This event will take place on March 25, Fond du Lac Public Library, Eugene G. McLane meeting room, 9:30 - 12 noon. The library will set up the room in “classroom” style, meaning there will be tables and chairs set up by the library to accommodate 45 people. I would like to see no seats unfilled and so I am requesting that everyone that can attend this event to register with Patti by our next meeting, February 25. ECWBA members have priority, and if there are seats left we can invite members of other beekeeping organizations in the area to join us. We’ll discuss that at our meeting when we know how many seats are left to be filled. Patti’s email: [email protected] We have been discussing honey bee genetics for some time now with Russians, Ankle Biters and VSH bees being the most Varroa Destructor resistant/tolerant types of Apis Mellifera. The only way we’re going to get to treatment-free colonies is to incorporate these genetics into our apiaries. Russians are somewhat different than others in temperament, winter cluster size, and that’s all I know. I’m looking forward to learning more.
