I don't remember why I went to the Wisconsin Honey Producers Association site today, but I found myself poking around there and found the WHPA Fall Convention link. I took a look at what it was about and found that Marla Spivak and Ross Conrad will be speakers. That excited me because I know that Marla has done a lot of research on Varroa and was instrumental in bringing VSH honeybees to us, and Ross writes about natural beekeeping methods that he uses in Vermont. David Tarpy of the University of North Carolina is a third speaker, but I don't know anything about him. The Convention will be held at the Holiday Inn South in Eau Claire Nov. 2 - 4 and costs $50.00 for members and $60.00 for non-members if registered by September 30, and increases $10.00 after that. I checked out membership dues and it's $10.00 for the first year. Quick math showed that I could join the WHPA and attend for the same amount of money so I joined online. Who knows the benefits I might reap. I'm not 100% sure that I'll be going, but I'm leaning that way enough that I reserved a room at a Motel 6 for $31.49/night. Since I can cancel anytime up to 6 p.m. on Nov. 2, nothing to lose. You need to call Motel 6 in Eau Claire to get that price. It costs more with online reservations. So I thought I'd share this with all of you in case you're interested. Wisconsin Honey Producers Association Quite frankly I never considered myself a honey producer (and this year is a good example), but rather a guy that tries to keep bees. I heard a story of a guy that killed his bees every fall because he was a honey producer and not a beekeeper. That didn't sit well with me. But I'm pretty sure that that guy is the exception and that most members are beekeepers first, honey comes second. At least I truly hope so. Gerard
